The opening show of Young Apprentice Series 2 saw the candidates undertake the task of making and selling frozen treats. Before this could happen, there was obviously a considerable amount of research required by the production team. As Location Director, I was sent off to Ice Cream Factories, Italian Gelato Stores and Sorbet Shops to sample the products and learn about the process of making frozen treats - not a bad way to earn a living in the summer!

I also had to recce potential locations that the candidates could sell their ice cream from. These included London Zoo, Sounthend-On Sea and Chessington World of Adventures. At Chessington, I chose a great spot that had considerable footfall and seemed fairly quiet.

However, on the day of filming, we turned up to the pitch and there was an extremely noisy roller-coaster going past the pitch every 30 seconds. I tried to convince my Senior Producer that this was not working when I recce'd it, but I am not sure he believed me! Anyway, we found another pitch and luckily didn't lose too much time. The candidates had a storming day, selling over £800 worth of frozen treats, which won them the task and the questionable treat of "zorbing" (rolling down the hill in a large plastic ball).

The Young Apprentice is nominationed for Best 'Reality & Constructed Factual'. Tune in Sunday 27 May, 8pm, BBC One & BBC One HD to find out who wins.
