The Ratechecker.

Know Your Worth. Negotiate With Confidence.

As part of our online event this Thursday, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the most powerful free tools available to freelancers in TV: the RateChecker.

Built to help freelancers negotiate with confidence — and to help employers and recruiters set fairer rates - the RateChecker is designed to bring greater transparency to an industry where pay can still feel opaque and inconsistent.

Since launching in 2020, 59,649+ anonymous rates have now been submitted by freelancers across the industry.

Unlike a static rate card or aspirational salary guide, the RateChecker is built on real, paid rates submitted anonymously by freelancers themselves. That means it reflects what people are actually being paid and helps track how rates shift over time across genres, platforms, channels and time slots.

Why it matters

Too often, freelancers are expected to negotiate in the dark.

The RateChecker helps change that by giving you access to valuable insight into:

  • average rates
  • highest and lowest reported rates
  • pay by role
  • differences across broadcasters, platforms, channels and time slots

The result is a tool that helps you make more informed decisions, negotiate more confidently, and better understand where your rate sits in the current market.

Completely anonymous. Genuinely useful.

All RateChecker submissions are completely confidential.

When you add the rate you were paid on a job, your identity is never revealed. We do not publish production company names and this is not about naming and shaming. The purpose is to build a clearer, more accurate picture of pay across the industry so freelancers can advocate for themselves with better information and so recruiters can benchmark more fairly too.

We also recognise that some companies operate at different scales and budgets. But by collecting enough data, the RateChecker helps establish realistic going rates for specific roles, genres, channels, platforms and time slots at any given moment.

Help build a better picture for everyone

By adding your current and past production rates anonymously, you’re contributing to a growing industry resource that supports fairer pay and better-informed negotiations for freelancers across TV.

The tool is simple to use, fully confidential, and designed to support career development in a practical way.

Visit and complete the RateChecker here.

Please note: if you work as crew, don’t include equipment rental when adding rates to recent credits.

What freelancers are saying

“This is a much-needed innovation in an industry which desperately needs more transparency in how it pays its freelancers.”

Chris Monk

“Brilliant feature! Use this and your Bectu rate card to prevent rates from being undercut!”

Nicholas de Taranto

“Knowledge is power and it's so important to be more open with rates so that individuals are not consistently underpaid for the value they bring. Transparency is crucial to fairness and closing the gender pay gap and this will be a great tool to empower freelancers.”

Anna Wallace

“This is so smart. At the intersection of so many issues is money. And nobody wants to talk about it. Know your worth!”

Campbell Glennie

“This is game changing for TV freelancers.”

Allanah Langstaff

“It's about time something like this has been implemented. Freelancers need to speak more freely about their rates and production companies need to stop paying people less than their worth.”

Raylean Murray

“This is huge. A real game changer.”

Martha Stern

“In an industry where you never know how much someone else doing the same job is being paid, this tool will prove vital when going into contract negotiations. Bravo.”

Ruairi Sparks

“I was on £180 a day, negotiated me down from their own initial £200 a day. This is why this is important.”
