Overview

With special guests Sara Kandasamy (Series Director) and Nacressa Swan (Executive Producer)

In 1972, Ugandan dictator Idi Amin ordered roughly 80,000 Ugandan Asians to leave the country within 90 days. Escaping Idi Amin, a two-part historical thriller from Dragonfly Film & TV for BBC Two and iPlayer, tells the story of what happened next.

Narrated by Priyanga Burford, the series charts the rising terror in Uganda and the economic tensions rooted in British colonial rule. It follows the 30,000 British passport holders who faced hostility and political pressure in the UK, in a climate shaped by Enoch Powell, and who arrived as refugees with only £50 to their name.

In this Masterclass, Sara and Nacressa take us behind the scenes of the series, from shaping a complex chapter of history into a tense, character-driven thriller to the care involved in telling a story that still resonates with families across Britain today.
