Overview
With special guest Nick Parnes, Chief Executive, Kalel Productions
Would you recognise cruelty if it was dressed up as care?
That is the question at the heart of The Experiment, Channel 4’s new documentary fronted by actor and writer Mat Fraser and presenter and disability rights activist Sophie Morgan. The programme centres on SegriLife House, a residential facility that appears to offer a radical, compassionate model of supported living for disabled adults, complete with professional branding and convincing promotional materials. But SegriLife House is not real. Its ideas are drawn from Nazi ideology and the segregation, devaluing and systematic murder of disabled people under the Nazi regime. The film tests whether members of the British public can be persuaded by those ideas when they are presented as a progressive answer to a modern social issue. Mat and Sophie also visit Hartheim Castle in Austria, a former Nazi killing centre, to tell the story of the hundreds of thousands of disabled people who lost their lives.
In this Masterclass, Nick Parnes takes us behind the scenes to explore how the experiment was designed and built, how disabled and neurodivergent actors were cast and supported with guidance from Access All Areas, and how the production handled the ethical and editorial challenges of filming members of the public in a constructed world. It is an honest look at bold factual storytelling and authentic representation, both on screen and behind the camera.
