VICE Rule Britannia Pitch at Sheffield Doc/Fest

It's that time again... VICE are back at this years Sheffield Doc Fest launching The Rule Britannia Pitch, offering you filmmakers the chance to win a commission from the award winning VICE UK documentaries team. And we thought you'd want to know all about it, given the finalist will be provided up to £25k to see their work come to life.

This is where you talented filmmakers on The Talent Manager come in:

VICE’s judging panel will be looking for:

  • Stories that can be turned into 30-60min documentaries
  • Ambitious, distinctive filmmakers with a track record for jaw-dropping ideas
  • Amazing Access
  • Understanding of VICE’s tone, style and Rule Britannia’s context. Rule Britannia is about unflinching insights into the idiosyncrasies of British life and spotlights incredible characters with honest stories which tell the audience something surprising or new about the country we live in.

If you’re still looking for some inspiration, look no further. Talent Manager member San Young was the winner of their last pitch in 2014! Take a look at her production on army cadets here.

She's offered a few words of wisdom for anyone thinking about applying...

"Reading the Rule Britannia Pitch brief back in 2014, I doubt I fully realised what a perfect opportunity it would be. Not only did it provide the development, funding and all-purpose home for a project that I loved, but it gave real momentum to my becoming a Producer/Director.

Anyone on this planet will know what incredible impact VICE documentaries have had on us and our viewing habits - but more importantly for us Directors, you should know they are an absolute joy to work with.

The Rule Britannia team are a group of filmmakers committed to powerful, awe-inspiring documentaries about our modern lives-with an open mind and a constant eye on what feels fresh. For me personally, that’s an ideal fit and the reason I make films.

Online content is also a world that we all need to at least consider, offering immediate access to millions, so if you think your film can work for the strand, it’s a powerful medium.

With this pitch, you'll get to meet the VICE documentary producers, be a part of the event at Doc/fest with the lovely Sheffield organisers, and then fingers crossed, do well and get support throughout the making of your film. For me, from the very first meeting, right through to the last leg of post-production, I felt supported and challenged in all the best ways.

For any of you who may be worried about public pitching, or who haven’t yet ventured into online territory, don’t give it a second thought - if you’ve got a film that needs to be made, go for it."

Well if that doesn't convince you to give it a go - this sure will. Alongside VICE providing you with a production budget of up to £25k, including a paid rate for the winner, you'll be invited to work at VICE's London office whilst developing their film. You'll get access to full in-house production facilities and work alongside an array of world-class documentarians as well as the core team behind Rule Britannia.
