FREELANCER ENGAGEMENT
Action for Freelancers (AfF) is a pan-industry collaboration to support freelancers within the UK television sector. The purpose is to champion & safeguard our skilled and valuable freelance workforce. We aim to work closely with freelancers, seeking to elevate and amplify their voices so they can be heard by all the industry.
You can contact us at any time at info@actionforfreelancers.org.uk
We have listened to feedback from the recent roundtable meetings, and developed more ways to ensure freelancer voices are at the heart of the project.
Here’s how you can stay involved…
1. Listening Sessions
The first meeting of each of the five Working Groups will now be a listening session, where as many freelancers as want can openly share their views and experiences, related to that specific area of the industry. These will take place on the following dates / times:
· WORKING CONDITIONS – Tuesday 17th June 2025, 9.30-11am
· RECRUITMENT – Wednesday 18th June 2025, 10am-11.30am
· SKILLS, TRAINING & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – Friday 20th June 2025, 2-3.30pm
· INFORMATION & KNOWLEDGE SHARING – Tuesday 24th June, 3-4.30pm
· MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING– Thursday 3rd July, 3-4.30pm

To ensure we hear a range of views, please only sign up to one meeting, whichever you feel is most relevant for you.
2. Attend working groups
There will be a minimum of freelancers invited to attend each Working Group, with a mantra of “no freelancers, no Working Group meeting.” We are opening up a fair and transparent selection process for freelancers to join Working Groups. An advertisement will be posted on the Screenskills Jobs Board in due course, and will be shared widely with freelancers’ networks, support groups,
professional associations, unions and other stakeholders. The application process will be open for over a week.
We will shortlist applications into a pool of 50 freelancers who reflect a range of voices with different backgrounds and experiences, to make sure we have wide representation.
From this pool, 17 will be selected to attend three working group meetings initially. Others in the pool might be contacted to deputise if needed, and then later be moved into refreshed working groups, to make sure we have new perspectives.
Two freelancers from across the Working Groups will be randomly selected to attend each monthly Core Group Meeting. Freelancers will be compensated for their time attending AfF Working Groups and Core Group meetings.
Interested freelancers will need to complete a short form with their details, including outlining which Working Group (s) they would like to join, demonstrating their understanding of the issues, and outlining relevant experience.
3. Freelancer Forums
We will be holding open online freelancer forums at least every 3 months, to share the latest news and hear your thoughts. These may be more regular if needed.
The first forum will take place on Wednesday 3rd September, 5-6.15pm.
