I’m a BBC Hostile Environments trained and BAFTA nominated lighting cameraman and drone pilot working across natural history, adventure, science and factual filmmaking. With a huge amount of experience on both shoulder and sticks, a highly trained photographic eye and proven technical competency, I film the crossover between the natural world and people, specialising in covering stories of positive engagement across species and geographic boundaries. Core skills include long lens, presenter sync, gimbal, and aerial photography. A particular specialist in rope-access, expedition and mountain camerawork, and working in extreme environments, I also regularly work in more down-to-earth settings and have broad experience ranging from blue-chip natural history and stylised people based sequences, all the way through to commercials. Credit highlights include award winning shows such as Our Planet, Planet Earth II, One Strange Rock, The Hunt and Expedition Volcano. I have worked under all climatic conditions across high altitude, desert, rainforest, savannah and arctic environments filming animals and people; big and large; friendly and fierce; for the advancement of science and conservation around the globe.
Alongside being a freelance cameraman, I run a professional and certified drone filming and surveying company, and can bring my vast experience working with UAV and remote controlled camera heads to any production. I'm a Sony F55 Owner Operator., however I'm vastly experienced with all current broadcast formats and cameras from large format to minicams, including specialist technologies such as aerial filming, high speed, thermal imaging, stabilisation and motion control. I regularly attend training courses to keep current with the most modern technologies.
As a qualified climbing instructor and ex-member of UK Mountain Rescue, I hold many complimentary qualifications and endorsements including pre-hospital trauma life support, swift-water rescue, off road driving, rope access and rigging for vertical environments and various useful access skills for staying alive and thriving in the worlds harshest environments.
I'm a fellow of the RGS, a member of the IAWF, fully vaccinated and hold 2 passports and a US I-Visa.

I've worked with Ryan on two month long 'adventure' shoots. Firstly, following the C19th Yukon gold rush trail over snow covered mountains and across freezing lakes and rivers before ending up digging for gold on a remote campsite. Secondly, filming a group of scientists monitoring the activity of the world's largest lava lake inside the volcano, Nyiragongo, on the eastern border of the DRC - an FCO 'red' zone. Both these shoots were physically demanding with a range of climbing, ski-ing & outdoor skills needed - Ryan didn't disappoint.
On both occasions, Ryan proved himself an invaluable member of the team. He applies himself to the task in hand with verve and is happy with the camera on the shoulder or legs. He knows his kit inside out and is especially good at natural history filming but can also turn his hand to observational doc style. Coupled with that, he's a dab hand with a drone and isn't precious about getting his hands dirty with go pros! He is also happy to self direct and is charming with presenters.
I'd have him along on the next shoot in a flash.
