There’s an intangible power about sport. It sews together strands of life, provides meaning and context and colours outside of the lines scribbled on to the page of my life. Weekends, evenings, and untold hours of my life are dedicated to it, playing, analysing and enjoying as well as being the basis for my career.
While I was born in and spent the first nine years of my life in Britain, it was my formative years between 9 and 15 in South Carolina that shaped my identity and crystallised my passion for sport. It’s also here where I developed a passion for American sports, becoming an Atlanta Falcons and Braves fan alongside my existing devotion to English football and specifically Crystal Palace Football Club
My four years at Goldsmiths College (University of London) were a fantastic experience, attaining a BA in Media and Communications (1.1) and an MA in Radio/Radio Journalism (Merit), all while playing for Goldsmiths Mens’ Football 2nds, a team I would captain in my final two years.
I’ve been working within the digital arena since my days at University and diversified with work with small agencies where I first began to use my abilities in a strategic marketing context while creating video content.
Professionally, I’ve been required to wear a number of hats. While the job title may have been journalist or copywriter, invariably this has meant taking on the roles of proofreader, fact-checker and editor.
Today, I’ve taken those lessons and expanded my skill set, telling sports stories for a number of purposes.
At ITV, from the busy 2018 summer to the present day, digital content was in the spotlight. Covering everything from the FIFA World Cup to the Tour de France, I am required to create and edit original online content, social media content, cover live events and ensure accuracy through fact-checking.
Not only did this require a keen eye for detail but the ability to deploy that under extreme pressure knowing that we were in direct competition with broadcasters to break stories and grab attention as quickly as possible.
This has continued at Sunset & Vine, where my work on cricket, a sport famous for its obsession over details and statistics, once again put those skills to the test, now not only required to edit highlights packages together but also craft motion-graphics, clip social media clips and write and perform voiceovers.
This year I also made my commentary debut for ITN productions, voicing digital highlights packages for the EFL including commentating on Championship clubs. I'm keen to grow further in this industry and would love to combine journalistic approach to my production and scripting work with my training in VO, commentary and radio performance.
I’m a self-starter, as comfortable working in an office environment as I am from home, or wherever required.
I’m also able to adapt to situations and sports I haven't worked on before, using my desire to research and immerse myself in sport to become as knowledgable as possible, and understand any surrounding culture
I thrive when given responsibility and when asked to work to tight deadlines in potentially stressful environments. My inability to sit still leads me to constantly be chasing the next challenge, both personally and professionally.
My CV is attached, but feel free to check out my website at cwmcginnes.com where you'll be able to see and hear some examples of my work in the sports media industry to date.
I look forward to hearing from you, and hope to work alongside you soon. Read Less
