Script editor Shaunna O’Brien, who has also worked for Working Title and Viacom International Studios UK, has joined the comedy indie as development producer.
Based in Manchester, Blue House was co-founded by veteran comedy director Christine Gernon and BBC Studios exec Emma Strain.
After co-producing BBC2’s Small Prophets with creator Mackenzie Crook’s indie Treasure Trove and Hot Productions, it is developing a slate of comedy and comedy dramas that, like that show, “find the funny in the human and the real”.
Gernon has helmed BBC comedies including Gavin and Stacey, Grandma’s House, One Foot in the Grave and Absolutely Fabulous as well as US titles New Girl, Ghosts and Superstore.
She previously worked with Strain on shows including Miranda and Up the Women. Strain also spent time as BBC Studios LA vice-president, where she worked on US adaptations of Miranda and This Country for Fox.
In a statement, Gernon and Strain said: “We are serious about making great comedy with brilliant people and built Blue House Productions to be a home for those exceptional people to come and do their best work, knowing they’ll be properly backed.
“And if that sounds like somewhere you want to make something, come and find us. We’re just getting started.”
